The Turtle's Secret
“The Turtle’s Secret” follows Marisol, a young girl living on Isla de las Mujeres off the coast of Mexico. Marisol has a deep connection to the ocean and spends her mornings sketching at Tortuga Shore before school. Her grandmother (Abuela) tells her stories about an ancient sea turtle named Kalea who has lived for centuries, carrying an important message that must be delivered to a special listener.
After a storm, Marisol discovers a carved turtle shell on the beach that triggers a mystical experience where she glimpses Kalea in the water. This discovery leads her on a journey of exploration as she finds a hidden cave with ancient carvings that match symbols on the shell. Marisol begins to understand that she might be the “listener” destined to receive Kalea’s message about the ocean and its creatures.
As Marisol’s connection to Kalea and the sea deepens, she becomes increasingly aware of the threats facing sea turtles and their habitats. When Kalea returns to the island to nest, Marisol recognizes her responsibility to protect not just the turtle eggs but the entire marine ecosystem. This realization inspires Marisol to take action in her community, bringing together other children to form the “Tortuga Guardians” who work to preserve the island’s natural environment.
Meet the Characters
Marisol Inés Jiménez
Marisol is a young environmental advocate and founder of the Tortuga Guardians who lives in a turquoise house on Isla de las Mujeres, Mexico. Born during a sea turtle nesting night, Marisol inherited her connection to the ocean from her great-grandmother, who was known as a “turtle whisperer.” From an early age, Marisol demonstrated a unique ability to listen to the sea, spending her mornings before school at Tortuga Shore with her sketchbook, documenting the island’s natural beauty and marine life.
Marisol’s life changed dramatically when she discovered an ancient carved turtle shell after a storm. This discovery led her to form a profound connection with Kalea, an ancient sea turtle carrying centuries of memories and an important message about ocean conservation. Through this spiritual connection, Marisol learned to listen to the ocean “not just with her ears, but with her heart,” becoming the chosen messenger for Kalea’s wisdom.
Recognized throughout the island for her environmental leadership, Marisol founded the Tortuga Guardians, a youth conservation group dedicated to protecting sea turtles and their habitats. Under her guidance, the group grew from a handful of children to over fifty members who conduct beach cleanups, monitor turtle nesting sites, educate tourists, and advocate for marine conservation. Marisol’s work has earned her recognition from local officials and inspired similar conservation efforts beyond her island. Known as “the girl who listened,” Marisol continues to share Kalea’s message that “the ocean is alive, and we belong to each other,” inspiring a new generation of ocean stewards.
Kalea
Kalea, whose name means “the bright one,” is an ancient sea turtle of legendary status who has lived for centuries in the waters surrounding Isla de las Mujeres, Mexico. Born beneath a star-filled sky on Tortuga Shore long before the island had roads, shops, or tourists, Kalea was destined for an extraordinary purpose beyond that of ordinary sea turtles. While most of her kind live around a hundred years, Kalea’s lifespan extended across multiple centuries, allowing her to witness the dramatic transformation of the oceans and coastlines from pristine environments to increasingly threatened ecosystems.
Throughout her exceptionally long life, Kalea served as a “Memory Keeper,” chosen by the sea to carry an important message across generations. She swam through changing waters, observing the arrival of ships with square sails, the construction of buildings with straight edges, the disappearance of fish from once-teeming waters, the spread of oil slicks across the ocean’s surface, and the proliferation of plastic pollution. Despite these troubling changes, Kalea continued to return to her birthplace at Isla de las Mujeres each nesting season, laying her eggs in the same sands where she herself had hatched centuries before. Her shell, marked with scars from fishing nets and boat propellers and adorned with barnacles, told the story of her long journey through time.
Guided by ancient wisdom, Kalea knew that her message needed to be passed to a human child—a special listener who could hear the ocean with their heart. This understanding led her to form a spiritual connection with Marisol, a young girl with an innate ability to listen to the sea. In her final nesting journey to Tortuga Shore, Kalea completed her mission by passing her centuries of knowledge and her urgent message about ocean conservation to Marisol, ensuring that her legacy would continue through the Tortuga Guardians and their work to protect the marine environment for future generations.
Abuela
Doña Inés, affectionately known as Abuela, is the wise and nurturing grandmother of Marisol Inés Jiménez, residing in their shared turquoise home on Isla de las Mujeres. With her distinctive silver braid and gentle presence, Abuela serves as the keeper of family traditions and island lore, creating a home filled with wind chimes, shells, and sun-faded photos of ancestors. Each morning, she prepares traditional meals like huevos con tomate and café de olla, maintaining the cultural practices that connect her family to their heritage and the island’s history.
As the daughter of a renowned “turtle whisperer,” Abuela inherited deep knowledge about the island’s sea turtles and their ancient connection to the people of Isla de las Mujeres. She understands the significance of being born on a nesting night—a trait shared by both her mother and her granddaughter Marisol—and recognizes the special ability to communicate with the ocean that runs through their family line. Abuela preserves these traditions through storytelling, sharing tales of the ancient turtle Kalea and explaining the meaning behind symbols found on carved shells and in hidden caves along the shore.
Abuela plays a crucial role in nurturing Marisol’s environmental calling, offering wisdom without judgment and supporting her granddaughter’s growing activism. When Marisol discovers the carved turtle shell and begins hearing the ocean’s message, Abuela validates these experiences rather than dismissing them, explaining that “dreams are waves—they don’t always tell you what is true, but they always tell you where to look.” She helps Marisol interpret ancient symbols, assists in creating protective signs for turtle nests, and stands proudly by as her granddaughter establishes the Tortuga Guardians. Through her quiet guidance and unwavering support, Abuela helps bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern conservation, ensuring that the legacy of listening to the sea continues through new generations.
